How to decline a document

Last reviewed 26 September 2026

Open the document from your email and use the link below it to decline. One decline stops the document for everyone on it, and the sender is emailed to say so, with your reason if you give one.

Before you decline

Declining is final for that document. If you have a question, or something needs changing, reply to the email instead: replies go to the sender, who can fix it and send a new version. Declining is for when you won't sign this document at all.

What happens

  1. You are asked to confirm, and can give a reason.
  2. The document stops. Nobody else can sign it.
  3. The sender gets an email saying you declined, with your reason, and that they can make a copy and send it again.
  4. Your decline is recorded on the document's audit trail, with the time and your IP address.

If you think the document is a scam

Don't just decline: report it, using the link at the bottom of the signing page. How to report a document.
